The Stanley White Rec Center in New Bern has been closed since Hurricane Florence.

The location, like so many around it, was hit hard by the storm. Members of the New Bern community are uncertain what the future holds for the beloved spot. Thursday, Duffyfield residents held a community meeting to discuss the rec center.

Numerous rumors have circulated about the future of the building. Anything from repair to demolition has been discussed among the public. Officials said feedback from Thursday's meeting is going to be used as a tool to help communicate the people's feelings to city leaders.

"From that, take those concerns and formulate them into a composed letter that we can send to our city leaders to say these are our desires of the community you serve," said Jamara Wallace, Chairman of the Greater Duffyfield Residents Council."

Alderman Barbara Best of Ward 5 attended Thursday's meeting but wasn't able to talk much about the status of the rec center. She did say rumors that have circulated were false and that she'll help set a meeting up so the community and city leaders can talk more.
