Elementary kids surprised with new bikes after Hurricane Florence

Elementary kids surprised with new bikes after Hurricane Florence (Nate Belt, NewsChannel 12)

A special surprise arrived at one Eastern North Carolina school Tuesday morning.

Academy Sports and Outdoors visited Trent Park Elementary to help get kids outside in style and in safety. In partnership with the New Bern Police Department, Academy Sports and Outdoors was able to make this year extra special.

30 bikes and helmets were donated to students in need this holiday season.

Many kids lost so much during Hurricane Florence. "It's very rewarding. You see the smile on their face like, 'Oh my gosh. I haven't had a bike in years,' or, 'I've outgrown my bike,' or, 'My bike was destroyed.' So to see that is rewarding and you get goosebumps," said Academy Sports and Outdoors Store Director Patti Page.

The surprise left many students with smiles when they were told they could take their new rides home.

NewsChannel 12's Nate Belt was there to see the kids' reaction to their new gift. Click the video for the heartwarming moment.
