GOLDSBORO, Wayne County — A South Carolina teenager is facing sex crimes in North Carolina after chats with a juvenile became "sexual in nature," the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said.
On Nov. 28, 2018, a Wayne County mother reported her daughter, who is under the age of 16 according to Major Richard Lewis, was chatting with an unknown man at the time.
Detectives began their investigation and went to South Carolina to interview Spartanburg resident Riley Kennington. After several interviews, the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office arrested 17-year-old Kennington on Jan. 10. He was held behind bars awaiting extradition to North Carolina.
Kennington was transported back to the Wayne County Jail on Monday after waiving extradition.
He was charged with indecent liberties with a minor and solicitation of a child by computer to commit a sex act.
The investigation revealed that Kennington never physically visited North Carolina. Contact between the two was only made online. Despite Kennington only being 17 years old, he's not recognized as a minor under the charges filed and is being held under a 60,000 dollar bond pending trial.
