A 49-year-old Nampa man has been sentenced up to 10 years in prison after he was convicted of molesting a child, but his sentence would make him eligible for parole much sooner.

The Canyon County Prosecutor's Office says Hugo Vega Sandoval was caught by a family member molesting a pre-school-aged child in 2021, which was then reported to law enforcement by a family member.

Judge Matthew J. Roker sentenced Vega Sandoval to three years fixed, followed by seven years indeterminate for a total of 10 years.

The judge, however, retained jurisdiction meaning he would be eligible to be placed on probation and released to the community within six to 12 months. Vega Sandoval will have to register as a sex offender, submit a DNA sample to the Idaho database, and have no contact with the victim or have any unsupervised contact with a minor for 15 years.

KBOI has reached out to the prosecutor's office for comment.
