Volunteers help repair homes in Winterville
WINTERVILLE, Pitt County - On the busy corner of Boyd and Mill, signs of spring are in the air.
But that's not all. There's the scent of fresh cut wood as Mattie de Jesus watches her home transform in front of her eyes. "I'm going to do it back to people I'm going to do something good for people just as these people have done for me," Jesus said. Tears fell as Mattie imagined what her brand new kitchen and porch will look like after volunteers from Rebuilding Together Pitt County's Mission at Home program and Christ's Church finish this project. "I could not pay them, I don't have the money to pay them, but they are doing this out of their hearts it makes me want to work for this program to join them to do what they are doing. Lord have mercy," Jesus said. After a bad fall through the porch and Hurricane Matthew, Mattie said this help could not come soon enough. People who can't afford can apply for the program. These changes don't just impact the homeowner, but the volunteers on the job. "We think about that could be my mom wanting to stay in her house and not have to go to a nursing home so to be able to age in the home they grew up in," said Natalie Edwards, volunteer. With 40 sets of helping hands spread throughout five homes in Winterville, it's quite the project for the week, but it comes with so much thanks from the people who needed it.
