It was a sight to behold Wednesday afternoon as workers continued to disassemble the former Grayden Paul Drawbridge in Beaufort.

As part of the North Carolina Department of Transportation's ongoing work on the Gallant’s Channel Bridge project, crews conducted underwater explosions on Wednesday and they are scheduled to continue the work on Jan. 23.

The normally navigable channel has been ordered closed by the Coast Guard and all boat traffic will be turned away from the area. Cedar Street will be closed to all traffic at Moore Street.

Town officials said they do not anticipate any effects from the blast to be felt away from the work area.

Spectators are not permitted and should stay clear of the area by both land and water. The blasts are expected to happen between 9 and 10 a.m. on Jan. 23.
