NEWPORT, Carteret County - Two fires are currently burning in the Croatan National Forest, the larger of which began on Mother's Day and is burning about four miles southwest of Newport.

The Mother's Day Fire encompasses nearly 50 acres as of Monday afternoon and has crews from the NC Forest Service, US Forest Service and Marine Corps Cherry Point working to fight it.

There is no containment yet achieved on the fire, but US Forest Service officials say crews conducted a burnout operation on Monday to set containment lines to the south of where the blaze is burning.

The Millis Swamp Fire encompasses 2.6 acres and is burning five miles west of Newport. That blaze is 50 percent contained and is in the mop up and patrol phase with crews from the NC and US Forest Service assigned to battle it.
