A spike in home fires in our state is now prompting warnings for residents to take precautions.

While the exact number of home fires is uncertain, Onslow County Fire Marshall Brian Kelly said there's already more home fires in our state this year than there were during this point last year. Because of that, he said you're encouraged to stay away from alternative heating methods like ovens or having space heaters too close to other objects.

"Some of the steps we can use to prevent these accidental fires is plugging our space heaters directly into the outlets, having our chimneys and our furnaces inspected annually by licensed or certified individuals that can work on them, having our heat pumps in our home air conditioning units inspected annually," Kelly said.

Kelly said it's also important to have a working smoke alarm in you home. The American Red Cross installs them for free along with some other outlets. If you need one installed, you can go the following routes below.
