Nearly $24,000 from an East Carolina University organization was donated to an area children's hospital on Tuesday.

Members of Pirates Vs. Cancer presented a $23,914 check to James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital. Organizers say Pirates Vs. Cancer was founded by Brody School of Medicine students in 2017 and works to empower children to beat cancer and improve their lives.

This year's totally virtual event raised more than $23,000 to support pediatric cancer programs at the hospital. Officials say that since the group began in 2017, it has raised more than $100,000.
