No charges will be filed in last Friday's incident where a teenager was hit by a bus near Jacksonville High School.

The incident happened around 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 9 on Gum Branch Road near Indian Drive. In a press release Monday, officials with the Jacksonville Police Department said the driver of the Onslow County School bus, Barbara Revels, 56, of Jacksonville was traveling Northwest in the right travel lane on Gum Branch Road. The pedestrian, Gary Connor Long, 16, of Jacksonville was at the intersection of Gum Brunch Road. He failed to yield to the school bus and ran into the road as the bus was proceeding through the intersection on a green light.

Police said in the report the driver of the bus braked and turned the steering wheel to the left, but was unable to avoid the pedestrian. The front right bumper struck Long, who remains at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville in critical condition.

“We appreciate the assistance of the Onslow County District Attorney’s Office and the cooperation of Onslow County Schools with this investigation.” said Chief Mike Yaniero, Director of Public Safety.

Friday evening, the City of Jacksonville announced it will request an additional review by the N.C. Department of Transportation of the area where the child was struck.
