New school in Richlands brings much anticipation

It's almost time for students to go back to school. It's also almost time for a new school in Richlands.

The First Pentecostal Church in Jacksonville knows that many parents need to go shopping for school supplies for their children. The church hosted the "Just for Kids" back to school rally Wednesday night. Children received backpacks stuffed with school supplies and more.

"Obviously, we are a church but it does not just focus on the spiritual element that kids need," Christopher King, children's pastor at First Pentecostal Church. "We focus on three primary elements. The body, mind, and soul. Every year we know there are a lot of stressers with going back to school. so for the past 4 years we have been putting on a back to school rally."

Students who attend the new Richlands Elementary School will certainly put those items to good use. Construction crews say they will be finished within a couple of weeks. The school is finished but work remains on the roads outside the school. Crews said they are on schedule for school to start on Aug. 27.

"I don't see why we can't get it done," said Caleb Gill, who is working on the site. "As long as the weather permits."

Jennifer White grew up near where the new school will be and is optimistic about it. Her daughter is excited, too.

"The teachers from Richlands Primary School were amazing," White said. "So I'm hoping that that transfers over to this new school. I had that in the schools myself.

"She's excited about going to a new school. She has friends that are going to the new school."
