New Onslow County task unit will focus on drunk drivers
A task unit specifically focused on catching drunk drivers is coming to Onslow County.
The Onslow County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved a DWI grant requested by the Onslow County Sheriff's Office. Onslow County is the only county in the state to have received a grant for impaired driving enforcement. The Onslow County Sheriff's Office will receive $1.4 million over a four-year period.
Sheriff Hans Miller plans to use the funds and create a full-time impaired driving enforcement unit that will include four new officers.
"Now that is no chump change. It's a lot of money," Miller said. "It allows us to hire four officers, one sergeant to supervise and three additional officers. Experienced officers because that is really what this requires."
While Onslow County is the 11th largest county in the state by population, it ranks sixth in the state for alcohol-related fatal crashes.
