Massive fire engulfs beer distribution facility

A massive fire that broke out before 4 a.m. at the RA Jeffreys beer distribution facility in New Bern caused significant damage and burned for hours Wednesday morning.

New Bern Fire Chief Bobby Boyd said his department put out the call for mutual aid early in the battle, with the fire becoming a three-alarm call as of 5 a.m. The facility is located at the intersection of Red Robin Lane and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Boyd said he had crews on scene for several hours to battle the blaze. The fire was contained and out except for hotspots by 8 a.m. New Bern Fire-Rescue was still on the scene as of Wednesday evening and Boyd said the investigation is still ongoing. The City of New Bern said in a press release the building has suffered significant heat damage. The cause of the fire is still undetermined.

An RA Jeffreys employee said told NewsChannel 12's Aisha Mbowe that no one was inside at the time the blaze began. The first employee that reported to work was the one that noticed the fire and called 911.
