Growing Washington welcomes new restaurant
WASHINGTON, Beaufort County —
A new restaurant held a soft opening in Downtown Washington on Friday.
The Hackney is a dream come true for owners Nick and Susan Sanders who have spent the past two years working on the restaurant.
The couple moved to Washington over two years ago from London. The pair wanted to bring a little bit of the city from across the pond to Eastern North Carolina.
After buying the old Bank of Washington building on Main Street, they went to work planning, designing and building.
Every meal that leaves the kitchen and is placed in front of a customer will be prepared with local meat, fish and produce.
Sanders wants to push the culinary boundaries and offer up new tastes for those who stop in for a bite.
"Our goal is to take those amazing ingredients and to turn them into incredible food," said Co-Owner Nick Sanders. "So we’re probably going to have a more eclectic, global perspective than the other fine dining restaurants around here which tend to focus on Southern fare."
The Sanders' are also planning to open a gin distillery right next door in a couple months.
Fun fact: the term "Hackney" comes from the name of a district in London.
