A former Duplin County teacher was arrested and charged with multiple felonies for sex acts with a student on Friday.

Devin Danielle Wright, 27, was charged with three counts of sexual activity with a student and three counts of taking indecent liberties with a student, totaling six felony charges.

Wright was placed in the Duplin County Jail under a $28,500 secured bond -- $22,500 for the sexual activity charges and a $6,000 for the indecent liberties charges.

In a written statement sent to NewsChannel 12, a Duplin County Schools representative said the following:

"As soon as the allegations were brought to the attention of school officials, the Sheriff's Office was contacted immediately and the teacher was placed on suspension. The teacher resigned on August 16. Duplin County Schools provided full cooperation and assistance as this matter was investigated. The safety and well-being of students is the school system's highest priority, and all necessary and appropriate action was taken at the conclusion of the investigation into this matter."

Wright taught at East Duplin High School and was also assistant coach for girls volleyball and soccer. She was employed with the school system from August 18, 2015 until August 16, 2017.
