The Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a dog actively attacking a one-year-old child last Monday in Rocky Mount. The dog, which the caller said was a pit bull, belonged to the family. The child's mother was trying to stab the dog to get it off the child.
When deputies arrived on scene, they said they found the dog slinging the child around in its mouth. A detective quickly shot and killed the dog.
Edgecombe County Rescue Squad and deputies on scene performed emergency first aid to try and stabilize her. Deputies report she was clinging to life, at that point.
She was transported to the hospital and then flown to Vidant Medical Center for treatment. At this time, her status is believed to be stable.
Out of respect for the family, no names or identifying information will be released at this time. The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office asked that everyone keep the little girl and her family in their thoughts and prayers. No charges are expected in this matter.
