Driver of 18-wheeler charged in deadly accident in Lenoir County

DEEP RUN, Lenoir County - A man is dead and two others are in the hospital following a deadly crash involving two 18-wheelers on Friday, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Stacy Smith, 68, of Deep Run died in the accident. His wife, Melissa Smith, of Deep Run, was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. There is no word on her condition.

Troopers said the accident happened at around 1:10 p.m. Friday. One 18-wheeler was traveling north on N.C. 11 and another was traveling east. Troopers said the 18-wheeler traveling east pulled out in front of the 18-wheeler going north. The two vehicles collided, causing the 18-wheeler to rollover and crash on top of a car sitting at a stop sign on Davis Mill Road.

Troopers said the car sitting at the stop sign had two people inside. The passenger in the car was killed. The driver is recovering at the hospital. Troopers identified the driver of the 18-wheeler at fault as Steven Brunt, 20, of Jacksonville. He was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

Troopers said the driver of the 18-wheeler that was hit was taken to Lenoir UNC Health Care in Kinston. There is no word on his condition. Officials identified him as Lance Long, 30, of Richlands.

The road was closed from about 1:30-5 p.m. as troopers investigated.
