Imagine spending all day at home with no air conditioning and limited access to fresh food.

Unfortunately, that's the reality for some seniors in rural communities, including Pitt County. The Pitt County Council on Aging can help with programs like Meals on Wheels to offering free fans to seniors over age 60. Executive Director Rich Zeck said all you have to do is give them a call.

"During the summer, a number of things happen for us," Zeck said. "Number one, we offer a place of refuge. So for people who are hot in their homes, they'll come to one of our five senior centers and cool off. So it's an opportunity for them to come here and be cool for at least 4-5 hours."

Zeck said Meals on Wheels is especially important this year because volunteers are able to check in with the seniors that may not come to the center on a regular basis. If you're interested in volunteering, Zeck encourages you to do so. You can call (252) 752-1717 or click here for its website.
