The Coast Guard assisted a man whose sailboat was taking on water near Columbia on the Alligator River on Sunday.

According to a press release from the Coast Guard, watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Elizabeth City were notified at about 5:15 p.m. of a boat taking on water southeast of Columbia in the Alligator River. A crew from Station Elizabeth City responded and towed the man's sailboat to the Alligator River Marina.

"Familiarizing yourself with your vessel and knowing all the required safety equipment is extremely important," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher Daniels, crew member during the case. "Always make sure you have more than one way to call for help when on the water."
