All lanes of U.S. 70 now open after tractor trailer accident on bridge
KINSTON, Lenoir County —
All lanes of U.S. 70 in Kinston are now open after the accident where a tractor trailer went through a bridge rail and the driver remains missing.
The accident happened on Dec. 9 during the winter weather we had in Eastern North Carolina. The tractor trailer went through the bridge railing and landed in the Neuse River. An extensive search began for the missing driver but after two days, the driver was not found and the search was eventually called off.
NC Department of Transportation officials did an underwater inspection of the bridge, which revealed no structural damage, and engineers reopened the bridge on Dec. 10. One lane was open while the railing was repaired. That work was finished Monday.
