2017 findings report released for Shackleford Banks horses
HARKERS ISLAND, Carteret County —
The annual findings report on the Shackleford Banks horses has been released by the Cape Lookout National Seashore and the Foundation for Shackleford Horses.
As of the release of this report, the herd numbers 119. Eight of them are foals. Findings from the report state that a stallion's lower leg was injured by a man-made object on the island. He later died from the complications of his injury. 14 foals were born in 2017, but one has died since then. Overall, six horses from a wide range of age classes died in 2017. However, the population has generally increased from 2013 to 2017.
Other highlights from the report include the following:
- the population is managed with a legislated target range of 120 to 130 horses
- the official population at the end of the report period was 120
- of the 20 horses that are 20 years of age or older, the majority (17) are female
- no roundups are planned in the foreseeable future
