Sheriff: Someone set body on fire along Craven County road, suspect wanted
NEW BERN, Craven County —
A body found burned beyond recognition was intentionally set on fire along a Craven County road, Sheriff Chip Hughes says.
Hughes said the call came in around midnight Tuesday as a brush fire call. When deputies arrived on scene, they said they found a body along the side of Beamon Road, west of New Bern.
At this time, deputies said the body is so badly burned that it is unidentifiable. However, authorities did say the body is that of a male. The body is being sent to Greenville for an autopsy.
Hughes also said Tuesday evening they have a suspect, Peter Schocker, 21, who is from the New Bern area. He is 5-foot-8 and a black male who was last seen driving a blue Honda Pilot with the license plate YXW-8198. He is considered armed and dangerous so call police if you see him or know where to find him.
