Stepmother charged with child abuse, assault by strangulation in Jacksonville

    A Jacksonville woman was arrested on child abuse and multiple drug charges.

    On Nov. 27, detectives with the Onslow County Sheriff's Office Special Victims' Unit received a report that a 6-year-old child was being abused. The child appeared to have significant injuries on their body that required medical treatment.

    Deputies arrested the child's stepmother on Wednesday. Shoshannah Scarlett-Booth, 38, of Sky Blue Lane in Jacksonville, is charged with:

    • Felony intentional child abuse inflicting serious injury
    • Felony assault by strangulation

    Deputies said, after searching Scarlett-Booth during the booking process, they found several illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia. She was then additionally charged with:

    • Felony possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver a schedule IV controlled substance
    • Three felony counts of trafficking opium and/or heroin
    • Two felony counts of possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver a schedule II controlled substance
    • Misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia

    Scarlett-Booth was placed in the Onslow County Detention Center under a $132,000 secured bond.
