The Carteret County Sheriff's Office has announced the arrest of a Stella woman on embezzlement charges stemming from her work as a treasurer with a volunteer fire department.

Linda Gibson, 72, of Wetherington Landing Road in Stella, was treasurer for the Stella Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years. She was arrested on Jan. 16 and has been charged with three counts of embezzlement from April 2014-September 2016.

Law enforcement said Gibson was responsible for the misappropriation of $12,000 along with using the department's ATM cards to collect cash and pay numerous personal bills not associated to the fire department. An investigation uncovered situations where Gibson submitted altered and fictitious invoices to the Carteret County finance office in an attempt to cover up the checks she wrote, endorsed and cashed.

Additional charges may be coming. Gibson was released on a $10,000 bond and she had a court appearance on Jan. 17.
