Thousands of East Carolina University students walk through The Mall everyday and many are stopping to take notice of the Field of Honor that's currently on display.

The annual patriotic display is organized by ECU Student Veteran Services and the Pirate Veterans Organization, something that's been done for more than five years. It took nine student veterans more than two hours to place all 964 flags.

The perimeter represents all current staff and faculty who are veterans. Over 50 percent of the flags have a pink ribbon, which is for the female veterans. Also inside the field are flags people brought recognizing loved ones.

The proceeds go to veteran programs and service projects.

"We try really really hard to bring into the fold any veteran that might feel like an outsider and I think it's just done amazing things for me and for my children and I really really want other people to feel that same thing," said Christiane Russell, Vice President of ECU Pirate Veterans Organization.
