ECU student killed in Charlotte car crash
CHARLOTTE - An 18-year-old East Carolina University student was killed in a four vehicle car crash on Sunday in Charlotte.
Destani Breanna May was a freshman at ECU, a school representative told reporters at NewsChannel 12. She was an intended nursing major.
Police said the crash happened at the intersection of Billy Graham Parkway and West Boulevard early Sunday morning, officials told our Charlotte affiliate WSOC.
Roberto Ruiz was driving a black 2012 Dodge Charger on West Boulevard when he allegedly ran a red light and hit a car driven by Zandria Sapu, according to officials.
Investigators said alcohol and speeding contributed to the crash. May was riding in the passenger seat of Sapu's car when Ruiz allegedly crashed into them.
Three other people had minor injuries in the collision. Police said Ruiz is facing charges of driving under the influence, felony death by motor vehicle and driving without a license.
Police said Sapu is also facing charges of driving after drinking under the age of 21.
