ASHEVILLE — Thursday, dental care came to several military veterans in Western North Carolina.
Eastern Carolina University has a community learning center near Sylva. It's one of eight statewide.
ECU's Smiles for Veterans is a chance for the school to serve those who have served in the Armed Forces.
On this one day, ECU representatives provided dental care to 40 veterans from rural areas who often face obstacles to care.
Organizers want this initial offering to catch on.
“We'd like to have this as a pilot program, and, if they can extend across all eight clinics, then we'd be able to treat 300 veterans across the state who are in need,” said Dr. Robert Manga, of ECU’s School of Dental Medicine.
The clinic helped veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Afghanistan.
ECU said it's a chance to say thank you.
