Students participated in the first day of school all over Eastern North Carolina on Monday.

Smiles and optimism were all around as students were greeted by teachers and their peers. Everyone came in with a positive outlook that the school year would be a good one.

At Ridgewood Elementary School in Pitt County, students were greeted by teachers as they entered the halls and went to their respective classes. NewsChannel 12's Morgan Newell spoke with Pierce Burgin, a fourth grader, about his favorite subject -- math -- and his expectations for the school year. You can see that video above.

Over in Lenoir County, NewsChannel 12's Daisha Jones was at Northeast Elementary where the red-carpet treatment was administered to students. A local church group called 902 adopted the school and coordinated with staff for the fun welcome for students, teachers and staff.
