A time-honored tradition for 23 years in Eastern North Carolina honors veterans in the community.

The Salute to Women of the Military: Past and Present is more than a luncheon. It’s an opportunity to recognize women as a vital part of our nation’s armed forces. More than 200 women filled the Flame’s banquet hall in New Bern on Thursday.

Veterans of the Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy, Army and Coast Guard came together to honor one another for their service to our country. The 2019 Woman Veteran of the Year, Bee Mayo, was also named. Mayo founded the event in 1987.

Mayo was recognized for her efforts in putting together this program that has positively impacted the community. "As I'm getting older, I guess it's nice to think your life has meant something to somebody. Very proud. Very proud to have been a part of this,” Mayo said.

The event included a silent auction, as well. The money raised at the event will be donated to Promise Pace – a sexual assault resource center in New Bern.
