Residents help Ocracoke students get set for school year
CEDAR ISLAND, Carteret County - After the power outage on Ocracoke set some families back, some of their neighbors in Carteret County are stepping up to help.
It all started with a teacher on Ocracoke putting out a call for help for much-needed school supplies. Carteret County resident Kaselun Moore sprang into action, and within just three days, had managed to wrangle more than $9,000 worth of school supplies - and more - to be taken to the Hyde County island.
"A friend of mine reached out to me individually and then she asked me to help and i said I would help," Moore said. "We had someone donate the funds to provide gym shoes for the students, so we have a big case of gift cards that will go out to the individual students."
Local businesses like Plain Jane's Cleaning and Janitorial and Kids Life Consignment in Morehead City, Creekstyle Thrift & Gifts in Newport and Davis Shore Provisions in Davis have stepped up to help, acting as collection points for others who want to donate. Supplies are being collected throughout the week, as a second shipment is set to be ferried over to the island on Friday. The deadline for collections is noon on Friday.
