CHARLOTTE - A man is charged with trying to bite a flight attendant, before opening a plane door and jumping to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport tarmac.

Tun Lon Sein had a half-smile on his face as he made his way to his first appearance in court one week after air marshals said he committed those crimes.

The flight was supposed to be the last leg of his trip from Bangkok, Thailand, to Hong Kong, Newark and finally to Charlotte, where he had boarded a flight to New Bern when he suddenly snapped.

There is still no explanation on why he acted out.

A native of Myanmar, he only speaks a tribal language called Kayin. A translator was flown in from Minnesota for the court date but at times, the translator seemed lost.

A handful of people from Charlotte's small Kayin community showed up to offer support but did not comment.

No one from the Episcopal Migration Ministry that sponsored Sein was at the hearing.

Without any definite idea of where he'd be living if he was released, the judge ordered Sein back to jail until they can figure that out.
