Gates Co. deputy charged with sexual offense of prisoner
RALEIGH - A Gates County sheriff's deputy was arrested on May 26 and charged with sexual assault charges of a prisoner.
Patrick Batts, who has worked with the sheriff's office for six months, is charged with sexual contact by a custodian, obstruction of justice and first-degree sexual offense. He was transporting a female inmate from Gates County to Hertford County on May 24 and reported the prisoner had escaped. Surveillance video shows the deputy let the prisoner go.
Batts was arrested later on May 26 for actions that occurred while en route to the jail. He was placed in a holding cell at the Hertford County jail under a $150,000 secured bond. He has since posted bond.
