NEW BERN, Craven County - An accident at the intersection of US 70 and Thurman Road in New Bern is causing delays during rush hour traffic.

The wreck occurred at approximately 3 p.m. on Tuesday and involve two vehicles, one of which is a Republic Services garbage truck. That vehicle struck a power pole and cracked it in half.

North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper M.A. Riggs said the garbage truck was traveling westbound, when the driver said his brakes must have failed, as he could not stop for the red light. He swerved to the right to avoid colliding with stopped cars but ended up striking the tail end of a utility trailer, a small white Kia car and then a power pole, which cracked in half.

Riggs said NCHP investigators will inspect the garbage truck to see if the brakes did indeed fail to determine the nature of charges that could be filed in the accident. No injuries were reported.
