Two separate crashes happen Friday in Winterville

WINTERVILLE, Pitt County - Two separate crashes in Winterville on Friday sent seven people to the hospital.

An accident Friday morning in Winterville sent six people to the hospital, according to the Winterville Community Fire Department. The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Old Tar Road and Laurie Ellis Road. One of the two vehicles involved in the wreck was upside down and one was on fire. Firefighters assisted with the people involved, traffic and debris removal.

Officials said the driver of the red vehicle pulled out in front of the car, which was traveling on Old Tar Road. The driver of the red vehicle, whose name has not been released, was cited for careless and reckless driving and failure to yield right of way.

Six people were injured, five in the car -- a mother and four children. They were transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Winterville EMS, Ayden EMS and Greenville Fire & Rescue also assisted with the accident.

The second accident happened Friday afternoon before 4:30 p.m. and involved an SUV and tractor trailer at Worthington Road and Corey Road.

The tractor truck was traveling west on Worthington Road toward Corey Road when the SUV, traveling south on Corey Road, pulled out in front of the tractor trailer. The SUV ended up in a ditch and a patient was extracted and sent to Vidant Medical Center with serious injuries.

The road was shut down but was expected to reopen Friday evening. A member of the Highway Patrol investigating the accident said the driver of the SUV will face charges. The tractor trailer driver was not injured.
