The wife of a man shot to death in Craven County back in December, who was just yesterday arrested and charged with murder, is in court today.

NewsChannel 12 has learned through Pamlico County Sheriff Chris Davis that Sharon Whitford was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with an open count of murder in the death of her husband, Jimmy Whitford, 51. The shooting happened at the couple's home on Aurora Road in Ernul on Dec. 30.

The news of Whitford's arrest comes a little over a week after warrants were issued that suggest investigators were building a murder case against Whitford. The case is being handled by the State Bureau of Investigation because Whitford was a former employee of the Craven County Clerk of Courts.

NewsChannel 12 also learned this morning that Craven County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Dan Garden is involved in the case. Search warrants obtained by NewsChannel 12 show the State Bureau of Investigation is seeking Garden's phone records for the last six months of 2017 in connection with the murder.

Garden has not been charged in the case. Whitford made her first appearance in front of a Craven County judge this morning. The judge read her charges and said she will be back in court Friday, February 9, at 9:30 a.m.
