Wayne, Pitt county spots among state wildflower award winners
The state Department of Transportation announced the winners of its annual wildflower program on Wednesday, with a pair of location in Eastern North Carolina among those being recognized.
The Best Regional Wildflower Planting for the Eastern Region in 2016 went to a grouping along US 264 at Mozingo Road in Pitt County. The runner-up in that category was a planting in Wayne County along US 117.
The program has been in place for more than 30 years and is designed to enhance the appearance and the environmental quality of North Carolina's highways.
The awards were presented in a ceremony in Raleigh attended by North Carolina's first lady, Kristin Cooper.
