Walmart evacuated after bomb threat

The Walmart in Newport at 6645 US-70 was evacuated after a bomb threat was found on Saturday. around 10 a.m.

The Manager of Walmart was notified by staff and customer of a note in the bathroom that said a bomb was in store.

Newport Police, along with Newport Fire & EMS, and members from the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and assisted getting those evacuated safely off the

Walmart property. A security perimeter was established, and officials contacted Marine Corps

Air Station Cherry Point for assistance sweeping the property with canines specially trained for

detection of explosive materials.

Morehead City Fire & EMS transported employees from Walmart to the Moose Lodge , where they stayed during search.

The interior and exterior of the building were searched. No explosive material was found, according to Police.

The Walmart was reopened around 1:30 p.m.

Law enforcement continues to investigate the incident and are reviewing surveillance footage and conducting interviews.
