KINSTON, Lenoir County - This weekend you might see 100 men strutting their stuff in red high heels through downtown Kinston.

It's all for a great cause -- supporting domestic violence victims in our area. The event is the first Walk in Her Shoes Fundraiser. All proceeds go toward services that save women like Amber every day.

The walk will be held Saturday from 3-5 p.m. at Pearson Park in Kinston. Men will participate in the mile-long march down Heritage Street, Atlantic Avenue and Mitchell Street. They will be wearing red high-heeled shoes to show that Lenoir, Greene and Duplin Counties.

"I've been here for one week," Amber said (we're not using her last name to protect her identity).

When Amber called the National Abuse Hotline, they led her to SAFE in Lenoir County. They were immediately able to help her escape with her child.

"This program is amazing. God definitely brought us here," Amber said.

This weekend, SAFE is holding the event to help provide services like sheltering, counseling, empowerment workshops and a crisis hotline. Organizers said the more people know about domestic violence, the easier they can spot it when it's happening.

"When a client actually has tears of joy in their eyes, it breaks my heart that we can't do more," said Sue N. Proctor, Executive Director of SAFE. "I mean, it's an awesome feeling to know you've made a difference.

"It's (domestic violence) anywhere, it's everywhere," said Kristi Blizzard, fundraiser chairman. "It's people that you don't even realize are going through this."

Amber said as a survivor, she knows about the resources available and how they can be the difference between life and death.

"It's something that has happened, I know for me, in a couple of different relationships," Amber said. "And I just never knew that there was places like this out there. So with this walk it will allow people to know that hey, there is actually a place where we can leave our homes."

Tickets are $40 per person ($30 students/children). Tickets are free with a Pledge Promise to raise five or more sponsors of $10 or more prior to the event. There will be free pre-walk, festivities and vendors throughout the park, speakers, music and more.

Following the walk, there will be an awards ceremony where individuals, teams and companies will be recognized. A VIP after party will be held at The Red Room located at 220 N. Herritage Street in Kinston.
