Veterans Day events going on in Eastern North Carolina

NEW BERN, Craven County - Veterans Day is November 11 and people across Eastern North Carolina are getting ready for a day full of fun events in honor of those who have served in the United States military. Here are a few of the events that have come across our newsdesk so far:

PCC Veterans Salute

Pitt Community College will honor the nation's military veterans Friday with the annual "PCC Veterans Salute," featuring remarks from retired Marine Maggie Weder. The events begin at 9 a.m. in the Craig F. Goess Student Center's Davenport Multipurpose Room. It is free and open to the public.

Sponsored by the PCC Student Veterans Association, this year's Veterans Salute will feature a pair of performances by the PCC Chorale and a JROTC Color Guard from D.H. Conley High School posting the colors. Prior to the ceremony, all faculty and staff who are veterans will be served breakfast in the Walter and Marie Williams Dining Room. Student veterans in good standing at the college are also invited to the event, which will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

All veterans planning to attend the breakfast are asked to contact Brady Quinn at dquinn@email.pittcc.edu prior to the event to give organizers an accurate headcount.

Veterans Day Ceremony

The Onslow County Disabled American Veterans (DAV) will hold Veterans Day recognition ceremony at 11:00 a.m., November 10 at 300 Sherwood Road In Jacksonville, NC. The public is invited.

River Bend Dedication

On November 11 at 4 p.m. the Town of River Bend will honor veterans by dedicating an engraved stone at a special ceremony to be held at town hall. Major General Tom Braaten (retired) will be the guest speaker and the New Bern High junior ROTC group will present colors and conclude the ceremony with Taps.

ECU Veterans Day Events

Several events honoring veterans are scheduled at East Carolina University the weeks of November 6 and November 13. A complete list of all activities can be found on their website here.

Carteret County Veterans Day Parade

The parade will be held on Arendell Street in Morehead City, on Saturday, November 11, 2017 and will start at 11:00 a.m. If you or your organization would like to participate in this patriotic event that honors our veterans, please contact the Carteret County Veterans Services Office at 252-728-8440.

Veterans Day Ceremony

Sponsored by Greenleaf Memorial Park and American Legion Post 24, this Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at Greenleaf Memorial Park Chapel, 900 River Road in New Bern from 11:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Veterans Day. The featured keynote speaker is Dobert Owsley, Chairman of the Craven County Veterans' and Vietnam War Veteran.

Winterville Veterans Day Celebration

The event is on Saturday November 11 at 2:00 p.m. in front of the Public Safety Building in Winterville.

Hands On Fort Macon

This Veterans Day event is meant for the public to get a better idea of what life might have been like as a solder or civilian stationed at Fort Macon during different periods of history. It is from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more details call 252-726-3775 or visit their website here.
