Two arrested, charged on alcohol-related charges after vehicle death
WILLIAMSTON, Martin County —
Two people, one from Williamston, were arrested and charged for their part in providing alcohol to an underage person who later died in a single-vehicle accident.
Officials with the Alcohol Law Enforcement Branch in Greenville said in a press release Mary K. Taylor, 20, of Virginia was charged with underage possession of an alcoholic beverage and giving an alcoholic beverage to a person less than 21 years old. Kenneth Congleton, 24, of Williamston, was charged with two counts of being over the age of 21 and aiding and abetting a person less than 21 years old in possessing an alcoholic beverage.
Nace Raine Mentzer of Colonial Heights, Va., died from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident on Hwy. 903 near Hwy. 11 in Martin County on April 8. Officials said Mentzer consumed alcoholic beverages at a Williamston residence which was purchased by Taylor in Virginia using a fake ID. The two then traveled to Congleton's home where they consumed the alcohol.
This investigation was conducted in conjunction with the NC State Highway Patrol with the assistance of the Virginia ABC Bureau of Law Enforcement. Additional charges in Virginia are possible.
