Traveling Vietnam War memorial in Morehead City for Memorial Day weekend
MOREHEAD CITY, Carteret County - Those looking for a way to pay tribute to veterans and those who have lost their lives serving this country can head down to Morehead City to take in the traveling Vietnam War Memorial Wall.
Vietnam vet Dennis Wallace said the traveling wall "just gives people a chance who can't go to DC an opportunity to see the wall itself."
The wall is 3/5 the scale of the Vietnam memorial in Washington D.C. The Otway Burns chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution brought the wall to Morehead City.
Linda Phelps, even organizer with the NSDAR, said about 250 veterans and community members on motorcycles escorted the wall into town. It was critical to bring it to Morehead City, she said, because of the large and active Vietnam War veterans community in the area.
Many veterans will go across several states following the wall as its tours across the country.
"I've done it many times," Wallace said. "We really enjoy it. It always brings a crowd people want to come out and see what's going on."
The wall will be in Morehead City until Tuesday when a closing ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. It is located at the Glad Tidings Church on Country Club Road near West Carteret High School
