BEAUFORT, Carteret County - Duke Power is warning commuters in Beaufort to be aware of a road closure Thursday morning for a tree removal.

The work begins at 8:30 a.m. in the 300 block of Turner Street. There will be several road closures in the immediate area of the intersection of Turner and Cedar streets during the removal of an oak tree that has been identified as a safety risk.

Beaufort Police and the Town of Beaufort Public Works employees will be on hand to direct traffic and manage the scene during the tree's removal. The eastbound lane will be closed from the eastern side of Moore Street to Turner Street.

The property owner agreed to have the treed removed after an assessment revealed likely danger to nearby power lines during a strong storm. Additionally, town officials said the oak tree was causing visibility issues for drivers at the Turner and Cedar streets intersection.

Semi-trucks had already struck and knocked off several branches from the tree in recent months.
