Topsail Island family business touts benefits of solar energy
TOPSAIL ISLAND, Onslow County - A Topsail Island family is celebrating a one-year anniversary of switching to solar energy and the benefits that come from it.
Claire Noto is the owner of Topsail Island Trading Company, one of two gift shops she has owned on the island for several years. The business just celebrated one year of going totally solar at both locations. The family says they've already seen drastic payoffs. "I really don't even know anything's different, except for saving money," Noto said. "It's really a family tradition," Noto said about the businesses. "I remember coming here when I was a kid, buying fudge, buying my T-shirts." After learning about switching to solar energy at a party last year, the family decided to go for it. The family said they've saved about $2,000 at each store in the past year. "Whenever you change something it's a little scary, maybe you think you're gonna lose power or something," Noto said. "But there's been no hiccups, no problems at all. "It was very expensive to get it going but we figured there's a four-year payback. We'll be all paid up and paid back in four years and we thought that was definitely worth the investment."
