Teens, fire chief recognized for heroics on the water

SWANSBORO, Carteret County - Two teens and the fire chief from Salter Path were recognized for their heroics in separate situations on the water this summer.

Cannon Tootle plays on the Swansboro soccer team. For some, he's a hero. Recently, Tootle and his friend, Cooper Hanford, spotted two women and a child caught in a rip current at Bogue Inlet Pier. Instead of panicking, they took matters into their own hands.

The City of Emerald Isle recognized Tootle and Hanford Tuesday at their meeting and awarded them the Emerald Medal for Heroic Actions.

On Wednesday, Salter Path fire chief Philip Miller with the Life Saving Medal. He said he truly appreciates the honor and dedicated it to his fire team.
