Teen boy killed trying to board bus, driver of vehicle identified
JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - A Dixon High School student was struck and killed by a vehicle while trying to board an Onslow County School bus Monday morning.
The 16 year-old victim has been identified as David Palacio.
First Sergeant David Oglesby with the Highway Patrol said the collision happened around 6:40 a.m. on Dawson Cabin Road near Stillwood Road. The bus was traveling toward Hwy. 17 and stopped in front of a home. The stop arm was extended on the school bus and the bus driver waved Palacio to cross.
Oglesby said the teen was struck by a black Honda Civic traveling in the opposite direction. According to officials, Joshua Aaron Block, 26, of Atascosa, Texas was the driver of vehicle. He is a Staff Sergeant at New River.
Palacio was taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital and was later pronounced dead.
Highway Patrol is meeting with the District Attorney this afternoon to discuss charges but none are pending at this time. There were 15 students on the bus at the time of the accident.
