GREENVILLE, Pitt County - A state trooper has resigned following an incident that landed him in the Pitt County Jail and has him facing a trio of charges.

Dexter Riggins, 26, resigned from the North Carolina Highway Patrol on June 9, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Michael Baker. Riggins was arrested later that day, charged with felony breaking and entering with the intent to terrorize or injure, misdemeanor simple assault and misdemeanor assault on a female. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 4.

Riggins has no record of disciplinary action, Baker said.

The case is being handled by the State Bureau of Investigation. SBI spokesperson Patty McQuillan described the June 4 incident as "domestic" in nature, but could add no other details outside of Riggins' charges.

Riggins is due in Pitt County Superior Court on June 28.
