State bill has new plan to distribute sales taxes locally
EMERALD ISLE, Carteret County - A state bill would take sales tax money from counties that generate more, and give it to other counties that make less.
Emerald Isle Town Manager Frank Rush believes the formula already plagues Carteret County because it doesn't take into account the number of seasonal residents. The population can go from 4,000 to 40,000 from winter to summer.
Maysville Town Manager Schumata Brown is excited about the bill, because he says people in his town tend to go shopping in places like Jacksonville, New Bern and Raleigh. This would bring some of the tax money back to Maysville.
If the bill -- which is sponsored by Sen. Harry Brown -- passes, it would go into effect in July.
