JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - If you received a plastic bag in your mailbox this week, don't throw it away.

The US Postal Service is hoping you'll fill it with canned goods as part of the organization's 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Since the program began, the postal service has collected more than 1.5 billion pounds of food.

Postal carrier Tom German says the food drive is one of his favorite events of the year.

"It's a good thing to do, it's the right thing to do and I know everybody can't do this, but just think what would happen if every person in this county could give one can of food," German said.

To donate, take your canned goods and other nonperishable food items, put them in the bag, tie it up and leave it by your mailbox on Saturday. Postal carriers will collect them for delivery to area charities.
