All clear given after New Bern Social Security building evacuated
NEW BERN, Craven County - The Social Security Administration building in New Bern closed Friday morning after a suspicious package was discovered, New Bern Police tell NewsChannel 12.
The package was located just before 10:30 a.m., New Bern Police Lt. David Daniels said. The package was nothing dangerous, according to a spokesperson with The Department of Homeland Security, which was called in to investigate the matter.
"The package was determined to be of no harm, and the all-clear has been given by FPS (Federal Protective Service) and its local law enforcement partners," said Susanna Marking. "The facility remains closed for the day and will re-open Monday morning in accordance with its regular schedule."
DHS took charge of the investigation, and was utilizing bomb sniffing dogs to check the package. If the package was determined to contain explosives, a HAZMAT team would have been brought in to do a final sweep before the building was given the all-clear.
The building is located at 1420 McCarthy Blvd., just south of US 17.
