Surprising snow brings mixed reactions to residents, tourists

NEW BERN, Craven County - Starting early Sunday, snowflakes started to fall all across the area to the surprise of many.

"I'm happy and I love it. I did not think it was going to snow here last night. It was warm out," said Chelsea Taylor, who was visiting New Bern from Atlantic Beach.

However others were not as happy, saying they only stepped foot outside to walk their dogs. Some tourists that were visiting New Bern were unprepared for the weather.

"This is the only jacket I packed so I might be going to the store and getting another jacket," said Katrina Berhow, visiting from Florida.

Despite the snow, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation, they have emergency crews on stand by but they are not concerned with bridges freezing or road conditions worsening due to the temperature being firmly above freezing.

The EMS directors for both Onslow and Craven County also confirmed that despite the snowfall, they had not received any weather-related emergency calls as of Sunday afternoon.
